Project TEACH began in 1990 to help meet the challenges of educating children experiencing homelessness in Sacramento County. As a model program, Project TEACH has assisted school districts to implement policies, procedures and programs that eliminate barriers to school enrollment. As the Local Educational Agency Liaison for homeless children and youth (liaison), the coordinator ensures compliance with the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Improvements Act of 2001 (McKinney-Vento). The liaison ensures the identification, enrollment and opportunities for success for children experiencing homelessness. The parents/guardians are informed of the educational rights, including the right to continue in the school of origin with transportation provided. The liaison resolves disputes that arise regarding school selection or enrollment.

Project TEACH provides services to help children enroll and succeed in school. For a review of the services, educational rights, directory of the district liaisons, shelter/service agencies, opportunities for involvement and resources, please visit the Project TEACH Web site.

Participants

Project TEACH serves over 5,500 children and their families each year in partnership with school districts in Sacramento County.
